Raman spectroscopy has been used to study the liquid system CsCl-TaCl5
-TaOCl3 at temperatures between 500 and 750 degrees C. In the binary C
sCl-TaOCl3 the equilibrium TaOCl4- + Cl- = TaOCl52- is established. As
the TaOCl3 concentration increases, formation of oligomeric ions with
bridging oxygen bonds also becomes significant. In the central part o
f the ternary system considerable oligomerisation occurs, and some mel
ts in this region form glasses when cooled rapidly.
