Diethyldithiocarbamate (Et(2)DTC) is not polarographically reducible,
but in complex combination with cobalt two prewaves are formed in ammo
nia buffer. These prewaves are due to catalytic cobalt and hydrogen di
scharge and they are useful for analytical purposes in the determinati
on of Et(2)DTC with high sensitivity (2 x 10(-6)-1 x 10(-4) M). The ef
fects of Co-II, ammonium hydroxide, and ammonium chloride concentratio
ns on the catalytic waves are described. A mechanism for the formation
of the prewaves is proposed, in which adsorption plays a prominent pa
rt. Suitable conditions for analytical applications are described.
