Abstract
The relaxed theory of inextensible networks allow fibres to grow short er, but not longer, in a deformation. Minimum energy and minimum compl ementary energy theorems for infinitesimal plane deformations of such networks are proved. It is shown that an energy-minimizing displacemen t field can be discontinuous. Examples illustrating the meaning of the theorems and the question of existence of solutions are discussed.
