B. Sturman et A. Chernykh, MECHANISM OF TRANSVERSE INSTABILITY OF COUNTERPROPAGATION IN PHOTOREFRACTIVE MEDIA, Journal of the Optical Society of America. B, Optical physics, 12(7), 1995, pp. 1384-1386
It is shown that counterpropagation of two light beams in a photorefra
ctive medium can be unstable against spontaneous emission of light wav
es of the same frequency and polarization traveling at small angles. T
he mechanism of the instability is based on the buildup of a set of sp
atial reflection gratings. The threshold thickness and the correspondi
ng emission angle are found. Results of the theory are applied to inte
rpretation of existing experimental data.
