A protoporphyrin IX derivative having three long alkyl chains and an a
xial imidazole (lipidprotoporphyrin) was homogeneously embedded into t
he bilayer membrane of the phospholipid vesicle. The O-2-binding affin
ity of the lipid-protoheme was affected by the phase transition of the
bilayer membrane, reflecting the change in the O-2-association rate c
onstant.
