Abstract
High density polyethylene tapes and fibres have been grafted with ally l alcohol by vapour phase radiation-induced graft polymerization. Graf ting was confirmed by FTIR, XPS and a dye assay. The ratio of surface to bulk grafted hydroxyl groups was higher for gel spun fibre as compa red to natural draw ratio tape. ESR indicates that allyl alcohol react s with polyethylene radicals during irradiation but termination is too rapid for the nature of any new radicals to be identified.
