A high temperature tensile test of high carbon steels was executed in
the temperature range of the mushy zone. Results were interpreted from
the viewpoint of solidification progress which was estimated by numer
ical simulation of microsegregation. The minimum temperature among tho
se at which ductility is zero corresponded to a solid fraction around
1 for high purity samples; this is because the brittleness in this tem
perature range is caused by the remaining liquid. Low purity samples e
xhibited a different ductility.
