Abstract
Considering the examples of magnitude-frequency dependence of earthqua ke occurrences and their stochastic process models, it is pointed out that the evidence against simple models such as the Gutenberg-Richter relation and the Poisson process model is mounting up. There have been some attempts to integrate different component empirical laws into mo re realistic models such as the branching Poisson-Markov model. Simple component laws such as those of Gutenberg-Richter and Omori, can be i nterpreted as fractal processes, and this notion can be extended to mu lti-fractal processes. Also, maximum entropy interpretation of the emp irical laws may suggest new insights into their structure.
