The straight-chain analog of penaresidins, azetidine alkaloids from th
e Okinawan marine sponge Penares sp., have been synthesized from D-xyl
ose. The key step in the synthesis includes the biomimetic-type ring c
losure of phytosphingosines. The novel isomerization through an azabic
ylobutyl ion-pair is also described.
