The isolation by chromatography (CC, TLC, HPLC) and characterization b
y spectroscopic (UV-Vis, IR, MS, H-1 NMR, CD) and chemical (silylation
, methylation, dehydration) methods of three new minor conjugated dode
caene C-50-carotenoids from Halofelax volcanii (each 2% of total carot
enoids) and Halobacterium salinarium (one present) are reported. The d
ata support the structures 3',4'-dihydromonoanhydrobacterioruberin (C5
0H76O3), 3',4'-epoxymonoanhydrobacterioruberin (C50H74O4) and a 3',4'-
dihydrdmonohydrobacterioruberin derivative named haloxanthin (C50H74O4
) with a novel peroxide end group.
