Superionic xAgI. (1-x)(Ag2O.nM(x)O(y)) glass systems, where M(x)O(y) =
B2O3, P2O5 or MoO3, have been investigated by infrared reflectance sp
ectroscopy in an attempt to identify structural characteristics relate
d to high ionic conductivity! Spectral analysis has shown that AgI inf
luences the local and intermediate range order of the host matr ix in
a manner and extent which depends on the Ag2O and AgI contents, as wel
l as on the nature of the glass forming oxide. Study of the far infrar
ed profiles have suggested that silver ions occupy two types of oxide
and one iodide site. The existence of mixed oxyiodide sites was also i
nferred. The extent of organisation of silver iodide sites into AgI li
ke microdomains was found to increase with AgI content and depend on t
he nature of the oxyanion matrix.
