Binary glasses containing 20 to 40 mol% gallia were formed in the bism
uth gallate system. The glasses transmit to approximately 8 mu m, have
glass transformation temperatures of 350-410 degrees C, densities of
7.9-8.4 g/cm(3) and thermal expansion coefficients near 10 ppm/K. Gall
ium oxide is believed to act as a network former in these glasses whic
h behave very similarly to the better known lead gallate glasses.
