A basically new contactless pneumatic method is proposed for determini
ng the surface tension of a liquid by measuring the critical gas-jet i
ncidence angle at which auto-oscillations arise in a ''gas-jet - liqui
d'' system. The results of experimental studies are presented. The sta
tistical dependence of the gas-jet critical angle of incidence on surf
ace tension and metrological characteristics of the method of measurem
ent and its implementing device are determined. The method can be appl
ied to control measurements of different liquid media under both labor
atory and industrial conditions.
