A new aluminum bath is suggested. Gas-liquid chromatography studies re
veal that during electrochemical pretreatment of a xylene solution of
AlBr3 a remethylation reaction accelerates and results in the formatio
n of pseudocumene, durene, prehnitene, and methyl bromide. These subst
ances promote the emergence of positively and negatively charged Al co
mplexes. The introduction of durene into a xylene electrolyte makes it
s electrochemical pretreatment unnecessary. The extraction of benzene
and toluene from a spent electrolyte restores its efficiency. Aluminum
coatings obtained may be used for protection of metal against corrosi
on.
