On 12th October 1992 Egypt was hit by one of the largest earthquakes i
n its recent history with magnitude of m(B) = 5.8. This event shook Ca
iro and the northern part of the Nile valley and was felt in much of E
gypt from Alexandria to Aswan causing widespread damage. The intensity
in the epicentral area was of VIII degree on the Modified Mercalli in
tensity scale. The focal mechanism solution indicates a normal faultin
g with a strike-slip component. Dynamic source parameters derived from
P-wave spectrum shows stress drop of about Delta sigma = 11 bar, seis
mic moment of M(0) = 0.0410(25) dyn*cm, fault length of L = 6.01 km a
nd relative displacement of 16.5 cm.
