Abstract
We determine the equilibrium of a finite catenary by the method of Lag range. We give an elementary yet rigorous proof of the existence and u niqueness of the stable equilibrium. The catenary is a nice nontrivial example in teaching constrained minimisation and could be used in tes ting numerical optimisation algorithms.
