A new range management profession is emerging, one where technical con
cerns interact with broader social, economic and cultural issues. This
is becoming increasingly important as greater pressures are exerted o
n the rangelands from a variety of different users. New perspectives o
n range management suggest an increasing focus on managing risk and su
staining livelihoods in the rangelands, combined with emphasis on conf
lict negotiation over multiple use. New concepts, new skills and metho
ds, and new ways of working will be vital to meet these challenges dur
ing the next century.
