The classical and quantum theory of synchrotron radiation (SR) is desc
ribed in some details: the schort history of development, the discover
y and the general properties of radiation. A special attention is give
n to the quantum effects: quantum fluctuations of the trajectory of pa
rticles and effect of radiative polarization of electrons and positron
s in a storage ring. The theory of ondulator radiation is briefly desc
ribed. The experimental investigation of SR properties and problems of
application in physical experiment are reviewed.
