Two patients with chronic renal insufficiency depending on dialysis ha
d bone scans with Tc-99m MDP to exclude or verify bone pathology in se
condary hyperparathyreodism. In both cases significant pathological tr
acer uptake was seen in the lungs, which was diagnosed as pulmonary ca
lcifications and in one patient in the myocardium. Both patients had s
lightly impaired pulmonary function tests whereas blood gas analysis w
as only pathologic in one patient. There were no radiologic changes in
the chest X-rays and in the thoracic CT. Bone scintigraphy is the mos
t sensitive diagnostic tool for diagnosing calcifications of the lungs
. The initial diagnosis can be very important for the initiation of an
early therapy and for further prognosis.
