Thrombolytic therapy has revolutionised the treatment of acute myocard ial infarction. This has led to a need for rapid and accurate diagnosi s of this condition, provision of a triage protocol to achieve initiat ion of thrombolytic therapy as soon as the diagnosis has been made, an d knowledge of the benefit:risk ratio of thrombolytic therapy in diffe rent subgroups of patients to allow the most effective use of these ag ents without compromising patient safety.
