S. Onaka et al., CRYSTAL ORIENTATION AND YIELD STRENGTH OF PURE MAGNESIUM CONTINUOUSLYCAST WITH A HEATED MOLD, Nippon Kinzoku Gakkaishi, 59(6), 1995, pp. 607-611
Crystal orientation and yield strength are studied for a magnesium ing
ot continuously cast by the OCC process. The ingot consists of elongat
ed subgrains parallel to the solidification direction. The disorientat
ion angles between neighboring subgrains are about 2 degrees. Overall
orientations of the subgrains in the ingot are well aligned and the in
got has a monocrystal-like structure. Anisotropy of plastic deformatio
n is observed for specimens cut from the ingot, which is similar to th
at in magnesium monocrystals. It is found that the presence of subboun
daries increases the critical resolved shear stresses for the basal-sl
ip system.
