A new instrumentation for the optical modelling of unstable rolling pr
ocesses, a polarisation device, a rolling mill, and rolls fabricated f
rom optical glass are described. The uniformity of the changes in cont
act stress during with increasing back tension preceding strip slippag
e between the rolls is explored. It is shown that the methods for the
determination of friction coefficient based on changes of the kinemati
cs of the metal deformed zone caused by external forces are unreliable
