Abstract
The thermotropic and lyotropic mesomorphism of 4-dodecyloxy-2-hydroxyb enzoic acid and sodium 4-dodecyloxy-2-hydroxybenzoate have been determ ined by a combination of optical microscopy, differential scanning cal orimetry and NMR methods. While the free acid shows thermotropic N and S-C mesophases, its sodium salt shows lyotropic hexagonal (H-1), lame llar (L(alpha)) and intermediate phases.
