The genus Lepidapedon is subdivided into several species groups and su
bgroups of species based on the vitelline distribution and the length
of the excretory vesicle. The species in each of the subgroups are lis
ted and keys to the species in most subgroups are given. The following
north-eastern Atlantic species are described or redescribed: Lepidape
don rachion from Melanogrammus aeglefinus, Gadus morhua, Aspitrigla cu
culus, Merlangius merlangus and Pollachius pollachius; L. cambrensis f
rom Enchelyopus cimbrius; L. sommervillae n. sp, from Trachyrincus sca
brus, T. murrayi and Coryphaenoides guentheri; L. elongatum from Gadus
morhua; L. gaevskayae from Coryphaenoides (Nematonurus) armatus; L, d
iscoveryi n. sp. from Coryphaenoides (Nematonurus) armatus; L. arlenae
n. sp. from Trachyrincus scabrus and T. murrayi; L. mariannae n. sp.
from Gaidropsarus argentatus; Lepidapedon spp. innom (Elongatum-group)
from Coryphaenoides guentheri and Coryphaenoides (Chalinura) leptolep
is; L. desclersae n. sp, from Lepidion eques, L. beveridgei from Coryp
haenoides (Nematonurus) armatus and C. (Chalinura) mediterraneus; and
L. zubchenkoi from Coryphaenoides (Chalinura) leptolepis and C. (C.) p
rofundicolus. The phylogeny, host-specificity and zoogeography of the
genus are briefly discussed.
