The effect of rain on Ku-band satellite broadcasting of analog video s
ignals has discouraged the use of Ku-band in many tropical and semitro
pical regions of the world. The promise of small home antennas at Ku-b
and appeared to be denied in these regions. However, today's new digit
al technologies, and recent refinements in CCIR modeling of Ku-band de
gradation due to rain, have changed that situation. This paper present
s a top level review of how digital technology and rain modeling chang
es have improved the viability of direct-to-home Ku-band broadcasting
in rainy regions.
