The partial photoionization cross section of the titanium 3d band has
been measured using synchrotron radiation in a wide photon energy rang
e (21-110 eV). Our prime interest has been concentrated on the resonan
t behaviour of the valence band in the vicinity of the 3p and 3s thres
holds in which the influence of autoionization appears as drastic fluc
tuations of a resonant profile. The resonance close to the 3s excitati
on edge has been interpreted to be primarily caused by the p-character
of the unoccupied band and the Cooper minimum of the 3p core level. W
e have also considered in details the effects which may distort a meas
ured profile. In addition, we have examined the subthreshold Auger emi
ssion that should already occur below the edge energy. However, our st
udy does not support the existence of the subthreshold Auger phenomeno
n in titanium.
