Abstract
High-resolution Mg-25 NMR data are reported for a single crystal of pu re forsterite (Mg2SiO4) at temperatures to about 1400 degrees C, which allow rates of exchange of Mg cations among specific sites in the str ucture to be obtained. Results are consistent with estimates of hoppin g frequencies derived from macroscopic diffusivity data, suggesting th at this approach holds potential for tracing microscopic diffusion pat hways in even very refractory minerals.
