The insufficient or inadequate use of existing information technologie
s is more and more recognized as an important cost factor. Consequentl
y, the question of the concrete effects of using information technolog
ies to the corporate performance is more frequently asked. Apart from
the high investments into information technology, it is especially the
high proportion of non-value creating activities in information work
(such as acquiring, transforming, passing on of information) that dema
nds concepts of information management which concentrate on an optimal
use and exploitation of the information generated and offered by info
rmation systems. It is the idea of information logistics (''the right
information at the right time to the right person'') together with the
vision of ''information at your fingertips'' which marks the change o
f perspective: information exchanges and warehouse concepts, together
with the emancipation of the user, sketch the way to an optimal use of
the available information infrastructure.
