Porous Al electrodes for the secondary battery with an AlCl3-1-butylpy
ridinium chloride molten salt electrolyte have been developed. Cyclic
voltammograms and deposition-dissolution cyclic efficiencies for vario
us Al electrodes were measured to study the anodic and cathodic behavi
ors and the cycle life, respectively. Pretreatment for Al wire and pow
der electrodes by phosphoric acid was effective to increase the anodic
and cathodic current densities and the cyclic efficiency. The additio
n of graphite powder into the Al powder electrode was also effective.
The optimun ratio of graphite powder to the treated Al powder was 5:1.
The cyclic efficiencies were 95-85%. Al deposited graphite powder was
the best material for the porous Al electrode. The Al was deposited o
n the graphite powder after the graphite was sufficiently mixed with t
he electrolyte. The cyclic efficiency was almost 100%.
