The electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectrum of Fe3+ in a natura
l single crystal of vesuvianite was investigated. The sample was taken
from a contact metamorphic zone of limestone blocks in Zulova granite
in the northern part of the Czech. Republic. The sample is of so-call
ed high symmetry disordered type. The EPR measurements revealed that F
e3+ substitutes the fivefold coordinated square-pyramidal B sites. In
the single crystal EPR spectra no indication could be observed for a d
istribution of Fe3+ over several sites though powder EPR spectra taken
at 50 K do not rule out this possibility.
