Abstract
The bisphenol antioxidant, 2,2'-methylene-bis(4-methyl-6-tert-butylphe nol), is oxidized by molecular oxygen at a noticeable rate in the medi um of the poorly oxidizable polymer, polycarbonate, at 200 degrees C. At the early stage, the process proceeds with autoacceleration: two mo les of O-2, are consumed per each mole of bisphenol used. The reaction products include highly volatile peroxides.
