This article examines differences between male and female general prac
titioners in private practice in New York City with regard to their at
titudes and orientations toward treating HIV-infected patients. The su
rvey asked about willingness to treat such patients and perceptions th
at might influence that willingness, particularly those related to saf
ety and self-efficacy and risk of occupationally acquiring HIV. Possib
le explanations for gender-related differences are considered. implica
tions of these findings for the development of HIV-related continuing
education programs are discussed.
