Abstract
This article examines differences between male and female general prac titioners in private practice in New York City with regard to their at titudes and orientations toward treating HIV-infected patients. The su rvey asked about willingness to treat such patients and perceptions th at might influence that willingness, particularly those related to saf ety and self-efficacy and risk of occupationally acquiring HIV. Possib le explanations for gender-related differences are considered. implica tions of these findings for the development of HIV-related continuing education programs are discussed.
