Animal welfare is a controversial issue. Whilst producers try to meet consumer needs for cheaper animal products, the welfare of our livesto ck is threatened, But what do we mean by animal welfare, and how can w e judge when an animal's welfare is compromised? Various methods have been devised, but more rigorous definitions are needed if welfare legi slation is to rest on firm scientific foundations rather than anecdota l evidence and public pressure.
