Abstract
A path model of the mediational effects of the quality of relationship s between spouse caregivers (N = 75) and their impaired partners was t ested Emotional closeness between spouses mediated the impact of the p artner's cognitive impairment, but not functional impairment, on the c aregiver's subjective effectiveness. In contrast to closeness, conflic t had a direct, but not a mediating, influence on effectiveness. Discu ssion highlights the importance of interpersonal ties for research and interventions with spouse caregivers.
