Objective: To asses the efficacy and acceptability of a combination of
an anti-progesterone and a stable prostaglandin analogue in 100 women
undergoing second trimester therapeutic termination of pregnancy. Res
ults: Abortion was successfully induced in 98 per cent of women. The m
edian induction to abortion interval was 6 hours 40 minutes (range 1'3
0''-23'05''). The placenta was retained in 46 pet cent of women. Seven
ty five per cent of patients required narcotic analgesia, 25 per cent
were managed as day cases. Conclusion: A combination of mifepristone a
nd vaginal misoprostol is an effective and acceptable method for secon
d trimester termination of pregnancy.
