Abstract
Reproductive characteristics of commercialy important estuarine fishes were studied in three areas associated to mangrove zones in the Gulf of Nicoya, Costa Rica, from April 1992 to June 1993. The species were: Ariopsis seemanni, A. dovii, A. osculus, Cathorops tuyra and C. stein dachneri. Gonadal inspection and occurrence of adults indicated prolon ged and variable spawning during the mid-rainy season characterized by a craneal deformation in the males and the formation of a fleshy prot uberance in the pelvic fin base of females.
