This chapter is designed to provide a guideline for the development of
a functional rehabilitation program. The main objective of functional
rehabilitation is the restoration of functional stability and a retur
n to preinjury levels of activity. Functional stability and a return t
o preinjury levels of activity. Functional stability refers to the int
egration of both primary and secondary joint stabilizers to permit nor
mal kinematics during dynamic activities. The objectives of functional
rehabilitation are achieved through the enhancement of agility, propr
ioception, and neuromuscular control. Sport-specific activities are al
so incorporated to prepare the athlete for full return to sport activi
ty.
