The observation of electrons emitted with up to 40% of the energy of a
n ion bombarding a solid surface [R.A. Baragiola et al., Phys. Rev. A
45 (1992) 5286] is analyzed theoretically in terms of a Fermi-shuttle
mechanism. We find nearly exponential energy spectra for the emitted e
lectrons. While the dependence of the slope on the bombarding conditio
ns is in agreement with experiment, its numerical value differs by two
orders of magnitude: the calculated spectra are systematically steepe
r than the experimental spectra.
