A new ATM output buffer management strategy with priority control func
tion is proposed, based on four types of cell classes. This strategy c
an use system resource more effectively, meet the quality of service (
QOS) requirements (i.e, cell loss probabilities and delay characterist
ics) of different services, and also can reduce the complexity of buff
er. Furthermore, overload from lower priority traffic doesn't degrade
the performance of higher priority traffic (i.e, cell loss rate and ce
ll delay characteristics).
