The severe corrosion on the largest Mexican bridge over seawater was s
tudied. The bridge has been in service since 1982 in the tropical envi
ronment of the Gulf of Mexico. It is supported by sets of piles hammer
-driven into sea soil. The concrete piles exhibited cracks up to 4 m l
ong above the sea level, which apparently were caused by the marine en
vironment as well as the construction procedures.
