The swelling behavior of acryloyl-L-proline methyl ester (A-ProOMe) ge
l with a reversible and stepwise volume change was studied in aqueous
solutions containing sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and lithium dodecyl
sulfate (LDS). The transition temperature was evaluated from both the
midpoint of the slope under the swelling vs temperature curve (VPTT) a
nd the statistical moment analysis using an area under the curve (ISTT
). With the addition of surfactants, the VPTT and ISTT increased and,
as a result, it was found that no changes in transition temperature ar
e influenced by the difference between the counterions of the two surf
actants. A plot of VPTT and ISTT gave a straight line with a reasonabl
e correlation, suggesting that the transition temperature of the gel,
which is affected by surfactant concentration, can be evaluated from I
STT.
