Abstract
We studied tile responses of Solenopsis fire ants to Pseudacteon phori d fly attacks in southeastern Brazil. The presence of these phorid par asites triggered a suite of phorid-specific defense responses includin g reduced foraging, bait guarding, a curled defensive posture, and gen eral colony immobility. Tile existence of these phorid-specific defens es indicates that Pseudacteon phorids exert substantial evolutionary p ressure on South American fire ant populations.
