A new species of large riverine bagrid catfish, Hemibagrus gracilis, i
s described from the eastern part of Peninsular Malaysia. Hemibagrus g
racilis seems to be most closely allied to H. planiceps, but differs i
n having a proportionately more elongate body, longer snout, lower and
more slender caudal peduncle, as well as more vertebrae. The complica
ted taxonomy of the related species, H. numerus is also discussed.
