This article reports on the application of computer vision techniques,
implemented on an IBM PC-compatible machine, as a means of obtaining
morphometric characterization of neural cells. The features considered
include projection polar histograms, orientation polar histograms, an
d the determination of the convex hull of dendritic (or axonal) arbori
zations. As will be discussed in this work, the Hough transformation t
echnique has proven to be of great help for the determination of all.
the-above-mentioned parameters. Two actual application examples respec
tive to the analysis of retinal ganglion cells are also presented and
discussed. (C) 1995 American Institute of Physics.
