By taking a generalized approach to finding p values, the classical F-
test of the one-way ANOVA is extended to the case of unequal error var
iances. The relationship of this result to other solutions in the lite
rature is discussed. An exact test for comparing variances of a number
of populations is also developed. Scheffe's procedure of multiple com
parison is extended to the case of unequal variances. The possibility
and the approach that one can take to extend the results to simple des
igns involving more than one factor are briefly discussed.
