Abstract
Diazotised aniline derivatives (2a-g) on reaction with 2-hydroxymethyl ene-1-tetralone (4) under Japp-Klingman conditions furnish the respect ive tetralin-l, 2-dione-2-arylhydrazones (5a-g), which on treatment wi th a mixture of gl. acetic acid and cone. hydrochloric acid undergo cy clization to give the corresponding 6, 11-dihydro-6-oxb-5H-benzo[b]-ca rbazole derivatives (6a-g). All compounds are tested for their antimic robial activities using chloramphenicol as a reference compound.
