Abstract
Western businesses have responded to increased competitive pressure wi th a number of quality initiatives. The most recent is total quality m anagement (TQM) This paper traces the evolution of TQM from traditiona l quality management, and its diffusion through various sectors of the economy. The aspects of TQM that have been studied in the academic li terature are summarized and areas for further study are suggested.
