Abstract
We have developed a model to predict the intensity of the diffuse ultr aviolet radiation field from any direction in the sky as a function of the scattering parameters of interstellar dust-the albedo and the pha se function-and the intensity of a possible extragalactic component. W e have applied this model to a restricted set of archival data between 1250 and 2000 Angstrom, placing limits of 0.3-0.6 on the albedo of th e dust grains and 100-400 photons cm(-2) s(-1) sr(-1) Angstrom(-1) on the intensity of an extragalactic background.
