The Au(110) surface has been studied by STM and RHEED (reflection high
energy electron diffraction). The surface structure was varied by dif
ferent annealing procedures. Very fast cooling can preserve part of th
e disordered state from above the phase transition temperature T-c = 6
50 K. In that state the surface is disordered, but develops local (1 x
3) structures. The well annealed surface develops the usual (1 x 2) s
tructure in combination with the mesoscopic ''fish scale'' pattern.
