An attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopi
c method has been developed for monitoring the epoxidation of indene t
o indene oxide. Spectral data on analytes and reaction mixtures were c
ollected in the range of 1500-900 cm(-1) and specific spectral regions
within this range were selected for quantitative analysis. Experiment
al data were processed using the multivariate statistical methods of m
ultiple linear regression and partial least squares. Reliable predicti
ons of indene and indene oxide levels in complex reaction mixtures wer
e successfully achieved as judged by a comparison to high-performance
liquid chromatography data.
